Nature Walk/Easy
2-3 Hours
7km Round Trip
Elevation Gain: 80m
Seasons: Summer, Winter, Fall, Spring
If your looking to get outside and enjoy the fresh air with your friends, family, kids, couch potato cousin… this is the one to do!! With such minimal elevation its basically a walk in the park, with one incline section (that runs along a cliff side) this wouldn’t be a hike for strollers, but you could probably get away with a slay if you have someone to carry it up the hill, and someone to carry the child if needed! But the section is VERY short, so I wouldn’t let it deter you.
Offering a beautiful suspension bridge over the North Saskatchewan River, a nice boardwalk over the Kootenay Plaines, and some peaceful forestry pathways leading to the Canyon. This is a perfect place to spend the day.
The trail is well marked, it would be pretty hard to get lost, and its well trafficked so not to be concerned about going solo. Dogs are to be kept on a leash, and over night camping is not permitted. But a day picnic would be perfect!
AND I apologize for the pictures!! It was a photography nightmare – Bright blue skies, a fresh blanket of snow, and the canyon running directly into the sun! But what can yah do!

Well. This hike wasn’t on the to do list. It wasn’t even no the radar! In fact, we were headed out to do Moose Mountain, which we did not do our research and the fire road leading to the trail head is closed until May 15th. So we thought we would attempt Nahahi Ridge though Elbow Falls campground. Closed till May 15th. So as we parked with 250 other cars heading up to Prairie Mountain… We decided that it wasn’t the peaceful mountain hike we wanted to do today, and headed back towards Bragg Creek. Thanks to All Trails we quickly located hikes near by and came across Fullerton Loop! Although it was also fairly busy, it was not nearly as busy as Prairie Mountain. And so we began!
We started with a fairly snowy trail, and than quickly entered some seriously muddy conditions and some icy run off! But the trail has such mild elevation it was at no concerns and we slowly made our way through. Keep in mind this trail was done in middle April, so its not always like this. But if your looking for a spring trail or low avi risk in the winter, it might be a good option!
The trail is a loop, we completed it counter clockwise. So we didn’t have a view until the very end. I would be impartial as too which way to do it, either direction has its advantages! Quick rewarded walking up towards the view. Or heading through the trees crossing a few bridges over creeks and heading into the view!
Although this is not my favourite hike, I would highly recommend it for beginners, kids, grandparents or anytime you just want to go for a nice nature walk! Its pretty quick. We REALLY took our time and just enjoyed the much needed sunshine. There were lots of dogs on the trail. I was informed they are allowed off leash.. But I would look into it just to be sure. I personally do not like having my pup off leash as we are in bear/cougar territory. And although the trail is very popular, especially this time of year, I would never forgive myself if something happened! But to each there own! Its a great trail for the dogs as it reminds in the tree line so no scrambling or scree.
This is a trail that would require minimal gear. Water, lunch, even runners would be ok (although I always recommend an ankle boot as you never know when your going to step the wrong way). But its not a trail you need to really prepare for! Just enjoy the fresh air!!

It takes about an hour to drive from Jasper and I think its worth the trip. There are lots of pull over spots, TONS wildlife and mountain views.
Although we go to catch world renoun brook and rainbow trout, there is so much for the lake to offer. Such as a lake cruise to spirit island, rent a kayak or canoe, eat dinner at the tea house, enjoy a nice picnic, a hike around the lake and many other trails the jet off to other hikes around the area (such as moose lake which I have a previous post about).
Just the drive in itself is worth it. Stopping off to see Malign canyon and enjoy all the wildlife you encounter on the way.
There is over night camping at the lake but it is only access by foot or boat. It usually books up a couple months in advance depending on the season, so make sure you look into it before you go. There are no campsites along the way, only day use. So make sure you plan accordingly – food/gas etc.
If you are planning on fishing, keep in mind this is a 24km lake. That is freaking huge. The few years we have gone we have yet to make it past the 5km mark due to high winds and not wanting to waste our boat battery. If you are keen on catching – look into hiring a local guide! They are extremely knowledgable and will get you there safety. This is a gas free lake and does require a national parks fishing license. They can be purchased at the highway 93 crossing, jasper information centre or (your best bet) On-Line Sport & Tackle Ltd they will point you in the right direction or set you up with everything you need to go including a guide, boat and/or gear!
I’ve attached the link to the Dinner boats, from the reviews its a very nice experience! Good for a date night or day!

We started the day by heading to the day use area, checking out the beach and setting up the boat for some fishing! With its relatively small size and “L” shape, its pretty easy to fish and a small size boat would work just fine! Also making its a good paddle where your not going to get caught in a huge mountain weather change!
The water is not glacier feed entirely so its a little blue without the freezing to death temperatures! But watch out for the lake and rainbow trout!! They’ve been caught up to 10lbs (thats pretty freaking big!!!!)
As far as I know, the resort on the lake as well as On-Line Sport & Tackle Ltd rents out all kinds of boats and are already in place at most of the lakes around town. Making it super easy to rent. They will also supply you with fishing gear, licenses, electric motors and batteries! No need to drag all your own if its a long trip!
Although short and sweet, my favourite thing about this lake is the island walk out. A wooden bridge at the end of the lake leading to a treed island with a few picnic tables was a true mountain cliche. And I loved every minute of being a tourist in my own province!!! Have a picnic, relax and listen to the bird chirping. Some of my favourite things to do.
This is a pretty touristy spot, but its worth your time to check out. Patrica lake is also on the way out which is also a popular swimming destination with mountain bike trails leading from town all through the lakes. I told you there was something for everyone!
]]>My first thought when I decided to take Sophie out for her first hike was, what do I need to pack and what if I forget something and were out in the middle of nowhere. I quickly remembered that she’s a baby. Eat, Sleep, Play. As long as I had food and a change of clothes she will be set. So I naturally over packed. 16 diapers, a full bag of wipes, doggy bags for dirty diapers, two sleepers, two onesies, a sunhat, a toque, two pairs of mitts, two pairs of socks, bug spray, 2 swaddles, a blanket – you name it, I packed two. What did she wear? The same thing I dressed her in to leave the house. How many diapers did I change? One. Needless to say, I packed like we were going backcountry camping for a month!
Over the last three months, 12 summits and 10 fishing trips I have learned you do not need to pack that much. Especially for the hike itself. I always have extra of everything in the diaper bag in the car but what to put in your pack you only need one of something, not everything. So I have generated a list of items I have found to be helpful on the trails.
And that my friends, is it. Of course, you need the regular items you take to hike normally… water, food, sunscreen, first aid kit, bear spray, etc.
The second thing I would like to discuss is specific products that I have found to be worth the purchase.
Overall I was very nervous the first time I hiked, I would be concerned if you weren’t. But if this is something you are used to doing, then I say go for it. I was comfortable again after about a half an hour of walking and the more I went the easier it was for me. The truth is she loves it. She’s being carried around all day with me and getting some good fresh air. I always recommend, especially at the beginning, choosing trails you have already done. So you are comfortable with the terrain and can limit any surprises. I choose trails with lots of tree coverage and popular trails where I know there would be other hikers in passing, just to be cautious. Remember to be bear smart and aware and you will be just fine! Let me know how it goes 🙂
